Isn't there a drag-and-drop utility which will set the type and creator
codes for MC automatically (or was that OMO?).
You could write an Applescript "droplet" or application to automate the
process.
In any case, once you set the codes, you'll need a
"resource-fork-friendly" compression/encoding program, i.e. one that
does not strip the resource fork, prior to emailing or "ftp-ing" the
stack. Stuffit w/ DropStuff works fine.
