I tried but was not very successfull.
About mpeg :
On the mac quicktime is ok to display mpeg files at any size.
On the pc quicktime do not display mpeg files (but mplayer.exe delivered with
windows 98 can do the job).
The workarounds i use are :
* if you want to use mpeg files from metaCard:
On the mac : using a player object in metacard
On the pc :
- i tried to use mci calls to display mpeg from metacard 2.2.5 but never successed
:-(
- launching c:/windows/mplayer.exe from metacard :-((
- using mci calls or directX from a toolbook or a director app :-(((
* if you want to use the metacard's player object to display video on both mac and
pc :
The video has to be compressed with the sorenson codec. It is easy to do if you
start from a high quality digital video source (for example numerize your video disc
to MJPEG or DV and then compress to Sorenson).
I was not able to compress from MPEG to Sorenson because MovieCleaner or
QuicktimePro convert only the video : the audio is lost in the process. But if you
have MPEG without audio, it could be a solution.

If you have to deliver your software in a controlled environment Quicktime +
Sorenson is a good solution.
If you have to deliver to the public (commercial cd-rom), most of Windows users do
not have Quicktime on their PC ; installing Quicktime on Windows is time-consuming
and quite difficult for end-users ; lot of them will discard the cd-rom or give a
phone call to the support...
If the goal is to make the life easy for the end-user, the best solution for
displaying video would be to use Quicktime on the Macintosh and directX on the PC.
