I tend to use your Method 2 and make links based on the clickText. To allow
for the flexibility of multiple destinations, I have in the past added an
item as a descriptor and used that as the link eg "[Ref1] Click here for
details" so word 1 of the clickText is the activating hyperlink. Not
elegant I grant you, but functional nonetheless.

For static or image text, overlaying transparent buttons can be a useful
alternative.

Similarly, the use of carefully located icons. Since MC does not suffer
from the problems of automatic active field opacity as in SC which
obliterates any underlying text, this can be an option in some circumstances.
