My primary strength is is Director developoment, and a key argument
*against* using Director is that it will not run on anything but Win32
or PowerMacs. If they suspect their distribution will ever need to go to
any other platform -- standard Mac, Win16, UNIX -- Director will not be
able to handle the transtion and the entire project will have to be
either re-programmed or scrapped.
This is, by the way, a huge frustration for me in the Director arena. I
think it's rather arrogant of Macromedia to not even port to a few
UNIX...
It will depend largely on what kind of media is required. If these folks
are in love with Flash graphics, for instance, you are hosed. If OTOH
you have managed to come up with stuff that looks as good as Director's
finest examples -- but have done it in MC instead -- that could well
sway them. Under the hood I think Dir and MC bear a close resemblance to
each other as far as overall capability goes, but Director does have
very strong rich media support by contrast.
AuthorWare... haven't thought of that one in years, but evidently it's
popular with some instructional media developers unable or unwilling to
hack scorekeeping code on their own. I was never particularlyimressed
with its scripting language, and even less so with its UI, so I can't go
into great depth about that one. However I'm not sure there is a Mac
version of the newest AWare available right now, and otherwise that app
shares the same distribution restrictions as Director.
Hope this helps!
