I think that may be the problem: On Unix systems it even prints out an
error message about it not being recognized as a JPEG file. Not sure
how I got it to display before when I tried, but maybe I mistyped or
something (menuV4.gif does work).

PS: just FYI, you can display that image with the new player object in
2.3, though you have to save it into a file because you can't put data
directly into a player object (yet).
