Since most Linux distributions carry all the major window managers, its
going to be very difficult to get good statistics. Also, many people
(myself included) use multiple window managers.

But the two with the highest visibility (which may or may not translate
into usage) are definately KDE and Gnome. As described to me by a Unix
guru friend of mine, Gnome is for people who want to play a lot and KDE
is for people who want to play a bit. (As you might guess, he uses the
command line :-)

For user interface issues, try subscribing to kde-look by following the

Gnome also has extensive discussion lists, including a couple on UI
issues. Try <http://www.gnome.org> and click those links!
