I am the pesky person with the particularly puzzling problem dealing with
numberFormat.
Here's what I have learned -- put quotes around the setting for
numberFormat.
Explanation. Following Jacque's statement about numberFormat operating as
expected for her, I did some more trials. I got out my Pentium laptop and
did the following.
I put two numbers in a field like this:
23.4563
12.357
In a button "No quotes" , I used the following script.
on mouseUp
set numberFormat to 0.##########
answer (line 1 of fld 1 + line 2 of fld 1)
end mouseUp
Result: 36. Definitely not correct.
In a button "Quotes", I used the following script.
on mouseUp
set numberFormat to "0.##########" <-- note the quotes!
answer (line 1 of fld 1 + line 2 of fld 1)
end mouseUp
Result: 35.8133 -- correct!
For the lack of quotations, the command was lost.
Why? My guess is that since we use "#" as a symbol to comment out a portion
of code, it may be interfering in my implementation. If it isn't interfering
in others' work, well and good. But on both my iMac and my PC laptop, I had
the original problem. When I get home I will try this solution on my iMac
and see if it works. I bet it will.
At any rate, thanks for putting up with a novice.
Raymond
