Hi Esther,
Did you test the full Metacard version or only the Metacard Starter Kit
(MSK) ? The first time, i used the MSK on MacOS, i feeled me a little
desapointed too... It was not clean configured (home stack not locked)
and it was a little difficult to imagine the Metacard power in writing
short 10 lines scripts...
After trying many other scripting tools (i was looking for an Hypercard
2.41 successor) on MacOS and Linux, i did the jump and suscribe to the
full Metacard 2.2 version (yet using the 2.3) and had to spend two weeks
to understand how the GUI works (not always realy as intuitive as the
Hypercard GUI is). After that, i could understand that Metacard was
realy the IDE i expected for, with many more power in it than i, first,
expected.
Today, i don't use Hypercard, Supercard and MacOS anymore.
Metacard+HTML+Javascript+CGI+PHP+Linux give me all the generic power
other developers can found (for many more monnay and in spending many
more time in development work) in using tools like Omnis Studio, Apple
WebObjects or MS Visual Interdev.
Metatalk is realy as simple to learn as Hypertalk was but many more
powerfull (no more Hypercard XCMD equivalent needed). The MC engine is
as fast as the best Java engines are. Even if i script only under Linux,
all my projects are ok for a deployment on MacOS, Windows or Unix
plateforms.
Please, just spend a little more time in testing Metacard, if you realy
want to know what kind of very great RAD it is ;-)
