Yes, if you're in 8-bit (256 color) display mode. Setting it to 16 or
32 bit ("thousands" or "millions) depth will fix the problem, as will
upgrading to 2.3.1 beta.

Players can't be used as containers or saved separately than a file.
You can do the first with image objects, though, and can save the data
using the file commands or urls.
