Yeah, I think so. The reason I didn't think so before is my tests didn't
insert any waits, so the response was too fast to actually see. But if
you insert a wait into the handler, you can see it blink:

on keydown theKey
  put "on"
  wait 60
  get flushevents("all")
end keydown

on keyup theKey
  put "off"
  wait 60
  get flushevents("all")
end keyup

You can use any alpha key; as Scott said, the control keys don't work.
The flushevents are necessary or you will cycle till daybreak if you
hold the key down longer than a second or two. Even so, I wouldn't go
leaning on it. :)
