As far as I recall, the MetaCard standard palette is the Netscape 216
colors, plus the windows 16 and a gray ramp.  Fairly safe for use in
MetaCard cross-platform, but if you want to be web safe you need to restrict
to the Netscape 216 colors.  (Though many people design for more than 256
colors now - all recent computers defaulting to displaying at least 16-bit.)
