It seems I had created a group, and the group's dimensions covered the other
fields. 

If I had set the layer lower than those fields, it wouldn't have been a
problem. But since there was to be a "help field" to cover the others when
it popped up, the layer was set higher.

The upshot is that even though the group was *not* opaque, it still
prevented the insertion cursor from showing in the fields underneath it.

So I rearranged some items to get it back.
