Ah, I haven't been paying attention to this thread, when I probably 
should have been!
One way for people who aren't too learned in ResEdit and editing 
icons in there, trying a program to apply the icon itself to a file 
would be a smart thing to do.  Take a look at Iconographer 2.0 
(available at  www.versiontracker.com  ) for a great program that 
even does Mac OS X icons, in addition to all other kinds of icons. 
It has a "Save into file" menu item that easily saves an icon inside 
of a file, with better results than a standard Get Info->Paste does 
(you usually lose some colors when doing that, at least in previous 
Mac OS versions) .
