Anyone interested may download a new puzzle game from the XWorlds site. It
makes a puzzle from any image using 'import snapshot' command, with
different sizes and number of pieces. Simple but works smooth.

Hi all,

It is the same old story again - custom icon on mac when burning a CD-rom.

I got good ideas and tricks last time, and they worked as long as
everything stayed on the computer but not when it came to making the CD.

As soon as I drag the files to the CD (Toast 4.1.1) the icon turns into
'hand with pen'.

Has anyone found a way making the custom icon stay foot yet?

I take it the Application's CUSTOM ICON is not being recognised.
If just pasting the icon into the picture filed of the File:Get Info window isnt
working for you:

get RESEDIT
Change the owner type ("signature") of the application (binary execuatable):
Add the icons to the binary executable.
Edit the BNDL resource to bind the application's new SIG to the new ICONS
you can also set custom icons for stak and text files...
(change the sigs of stack files to get the new icons)

Does anyone have an external that exports a card to a jpeg file? Not pict,
that's already possible, just jpeg. This would include combining all
layers, groups etc, and saving the output to a single jpeg.

I'm making some web specific tools and it would be very handy to go straight
to jpeg without any intermediary steps.

Free or for sale. Mac and PC would be great, Linux is a bonus (although on
UNIX machines I can simply run a bunch of utils to do the conversions from
PICT to JPEG).

The latest version of the engine can export JPEG natively. So you could
import a snapshot of the card and export that, or export the PICT that is
already possible and convert that to JPEG. Check out the beta at
ftp://ftp.metacard.com/MetaCard/2.3.2

This should (have) work(ed) ever since the Mac got the ability to cut and
paste icons--System 7.1, maybe--or 7.5.

The drawback is that the icons are not attached to your application in the
"right" way. A user could get info on your application, click on the icon,
cut, and the standard MetaCard icon would show from then on.

Does choosing an icon file in the MetaCard standalone builder get the job
done?

I've only done this a few times without SuperCard's help, but it involves
opening the application in resedit and changing the bndl resource, if memory
serves. The desktop file also enters into the picture: if you choose one
icon and creator code for your application, and then decide to use another
icon but the same creator code, you will likely need to rebuild the desktop
to see the new icon.

Your correct about the system 7 onwards when it comes to icon pasting.
However, they cannot delete or edit the icon if it's on a CDROM.

The only other method is using resedit, but you really need to know what
your doing. As for MetaCard, I tried it a few years back, had problems and
never tried again - shoot me, I'm old...

Ah, I haven't been paying attention to this thread, when I probably
should have been!
One way for people who aren't too learned in ResEdit and editing
icons in there, trying a program to apply the icon itself to a file
would be a smart thing to do. Take a look at Iconographer 2.0
(available at www.versiontracker.com ) for a great program that
even does Mac OS X icons, in addition to all other kinds of icons.
It has a "Save into file" menu item that easily saves an icon inside
of a file, with better results than a standard Get Info->Paste does
(you usually lose some colors when doing that, at least in previous
Mac OS versions) .

Yes I have, it works great. But part of the problem *now* is that many of
the imported images need to be specifically branded which means you now have
at least 2 images to export to one jpeg. I even need the flexibility to
export a field on top of an imported image to jpeg.

The process cannot be done in an editor, it requires complexity that I can
solve in MetaCard. Currently the Jpeg export helps *a lot*, but now I'm
looking for the crown jewel - export a card and all it's contents to a jpeg
file.

Subject: Re: YOPI: was funny little linux device...

Talking to myself but...

Found an even better sounding Linux PDA... I include most of the article
(forgive me), but I hope it's of interest...

    http://www.linuxworld.com/linuxworld/lw-2000-06/f_lw-06-h3600.html

Compaq H3600
Inside is a 32-bit, 206 MHz Intel StrongARM processor with 32 MB of RAM and
16 MB of ROM (FlashRAM really). Although the Linux version hasn't been
tested for battery life, the Windows CE version is rated to run 12 hours on
its rechargeable lithium-polymer battery.

What's really cool is that the device runs a low-footprint version of X. The
frame buffer for the device was created by Jim Gettys, one of the original
creators of X Window System, with the help of Keith Packard, another member
of the original X Window team. The H3600's X version fits in about 600 KB
and consumes little memory because of the relatively small size of the
screen. The same frame buffer is already in the standard X Window
distribution, so there are no new surprises for developers here.

Gettys suggested a possible development environment for the device in the
future. Instead of a system emulator or a cross-compiler that you run on a
developer workstation, you may be able to directly develop and test software
on the device itself. That can be done using a PC Card network connection
(either Ethernet or Wireless). You can telnet into the H3600, run Emacs or
X-clients directly off the handheld, display it on your workstation, and
compile with gcc or other tools. It is a Linux platform, after all. That
process not only saves time on development but can also save on cost since
the developer does not have to purchase a separate kit or emulator for the
system. Gettys also said that his team is currently working on a NetBSD port
for the device, which should increase the popularity of the Open Handheld
even more.

Unofficially open
Compaq has not made this an official product. Instead, it wants to test the
market demand for a Linux version of the H3600. To have an H3600 with Linux,
you have to buy the standard Windows CE version and then download and
install the Linux boot-loader, kernel and operating system. The installation
process is a little tricky right now, but Compaq is working on smoothing it
out. Compaq is even working to save the existing Windows CE image in the
FlashRAM so those who care to can save the Windows CE image elsewhere and
later reinstall it or sell it off to someone else.

The Linux device might soon have a better standing than Microsoft's Windows
CE devices, which have not been able to break Palm's greater than 70 percent
market share. The advantage of the Linux version is that Linux is a
fast-growing market with lots of available software. Additionally, almost
every Linux user has a ready environment in which to develop for the Open
Handheld. It can even run the same code as that for regular Linux computers
by simply compiling for the StrongARM platform. The Open Handheld has most
of the same features of a standard Linux desktop, thus users may already be
familiar with the user environment. The H3600 is not likely to run KDE or
GNOME because of the complexity of such user interfaces, but it will run X
and simpler window managers such as TWM.

Compaq's wait-and-see attitude for the Linux version may be understandable,
considering that the company doesn't really support Linux on most of its
products, doesn't have the necessary technical support infrastructure, and
has to try the new product in a very competitive market. However, should the
H3600 take a strong hold in the market, it is likely that Compaq will offer
it as a full product.

The $499 price tag is sweet. It is about $50 higher than the Palm IIIc but
lower than larger handhelds from Psion and others. The H3650 Windows CE
version should start appearing in major retail stores such as Radio Shack
and Best Buy around the US by mid-July. The PCMCIA expansion port costs $149
extra, while the CompactFlash expansion costs $49.95. If you want to be one
of the first on the block with this bad-ass PDA, you can register with
Compaq (see Resources for a link) to be notified as soon as they come out.

set the filename of image 1 to x
show image 1 with reveal very slowly
    wait theRate secs
if the currentTime of player "talkPlayer"= the duration of player
"talkPlayer" then
      exit repeat
    end if
  end repeat

## I need to be able to have a key down or mousedown action
    ## in the sub stack theater by the user that will exit
     the above repeat.
      ## but no messages get through until the loop
          ##is finished.

hide image 1 with shrink to center slowly
set the loc of image 1 to -680,-680
  repeat with x = 80 down to 0
set the playLoudness of player "musicPlayer" to x
    wait 4 ticks
  end repeat
  stop player "musicPlayer"
  close stack "theater"
  set the directory to tRootDir
end runTalk

I put this into the card script of the card being shown
in the substack where the slide show is playing
on mouseUp
  stop player "theTalk"
  stop player "theMusic"
  close this stack
end mouseUp

but nothing happens.

Well I'm listening with great interest.... with a bias towards Windows CE on
Pocket PC's though....

I'd really like to see some feedback on this, even if its just an expression
of interest from other developers.

I don't know if this list is back to full strength as I don't seem to be
getting the volume through previous to the 'list move'.

Regards

Sorry Eva,
Maybe you didn't see my other posting, which stated that the problem is at
my end. I use the rules filter in Outlook to filter my mail and somehow
setup two addresses for the list. So please disregard my post. thanks,
