When I choose "pulldown" from the list of styles in the button
properties dialog, MC immediately re-selects "popup" instead. I can set
the button style to "pulldown" via the message box, though. The problem
seems to be with the dialog interface.

No. I cannot choose most of the button styles in the right-hand list
except for popup. Looks like an interface problem rather than an engine
problem, I guess.
