I can't say what Metacard does exactly when not using QuickTime, but 
the files you are able to play depend I think on the version of the 
Windows Media Player (or whatever it has been called in the past) 
that is installed. For example, Media Player 6.1 is installed with 
Win 98 SE. This doesn't allow the playing of mp3 files through a 
Metacard player object. But if you upgrade the Media Player to 6.4, 
mp3 files can be played without QuickTime.

The need for proper file extensions on Windows is part of the 
behavior of both QuickTime and the Windows Media Player.
