At least under OS X the OS itself seems rock solid. The GUI part is
not quite as robust yet: on more than one occasion we've had to force
a shutdown to get the GUI unwedged. But this is true of X11 too:
sometimes you need to telnet into a machine from another machine to
kill off some runaway process that's got ahold of the X server and
won't let go. You rarely even have to restart the X server, though,
let alone shut down the whole OS. Not sure if you can do this with OS
X because there are so many more dependencies between the various
processes.

I think the bigger question is how the battle between Darwin and
LinuxPPC will go. Each has its advantages, but it's hard to see how
both of them can thrive in what must be a pretty small pond. And if
they get that X server for OS X polished up some, *both* of them may
go away because you'll have the best of the Mac and UNIX worlds
without even having to reboot your Mac. Throw in SoftWindows or VPC
and you'll be able to develop for all platforms MetaCard supports at
the same time on one screen!
