Perhaps a better tact would be...

"Actually, it's not that difficult.  If the date and time are returned in
Control Panel format (a la HyperTalk ), one can write a simple script to
decypher the Control Panel settings by creating a known date in dateItems
format, converting it to a short date, and parsing the result.  Once one
knows the format, all that is required is a function to convert dates &
times from one of the two "universal" formats in which they should be
stored internally (ie: dateItems or seconds) to the format in which the
user wants it displayed.

There is one minor shortcoming from my perspective: The Control Panel does
not include a setting for Calendar format (ie: Monday as the first day of
the week vs Sunday as the first day of the week)."
