This is annoying to myself as well.  My solution was to use the File 
Exchange control panel to set the filetype.  This way, no matter what 
I do, if I ftp a MetaCard stack or any other filetype I work with the 
Mac OS will reset it's original filetype to what I specified based on 
the extension.  Was very easy to do but is mostly useful only to me 
unless all Mac users do it.
