There is more to it than money. To get the same income, he would need
to sell 10 copies instead of 1. This may or may not happen. I am just
switching to MetaCard, so I can tell that there is some barrier to
hop over (and I am relatively experienced programmer in a number of
environments). Many HC users are likely to have more "adjustment
pains" than me, so Scott's support costs will skyrocket. The high
price of MC is afforded by professionals, which usually means that
they know programming better, keeping support effort and expense
within a reason. If his user base grows 10-fold with all the converts
and hobby-developers, he will actually have probably 30-fold increase
in support duties.
On the other hand, making older version available at lower price (but
not as low as $99 -- I would suggest half of regular price) could be
something to consider, although the issue of annual updates may be a
problem.
