| >Question from an Apple newbie,
| >What should I do to prepare an MC MAC 'stand alone' for distribution?
| ...>simply an http link (option click, and the file downloads).
Thank you to everyone who sent help, including Jeanne, Sivakatirswami,
Mark and Signe. FYI the list, it now works and here is what I did (a
combination of advice from several people, mostly Signe).
| You open DropStuff. Then in File --> Preferences check the following boxes:
|
| Stuffing --> Make self-extracting for Macintosh
|
| BinHexing --> Encode archive into binhex format
| Remove ".sit" from filename.
At first I thought 'stuffing' and 'binhexing were alternatives
but discovered, I had to do both. I didn't have DropStuff but
was able to get a shareware version from downloads.com - which
I can pay $30 for and keep using.
|
| This results in 2 files. Just keep and upload the one with the ".hxq"
| extension to your server.
Right, did that. I used fetch to upload and discovered I had
to set the binhex option while uploading, as Mark suggested.
|
| The user downloads the hxq-file which is then opened and extracted,
| results in 3 files of which only the one with the mc-icon should be
| kept.
Right. In my testing I used IE and its download manager saved
a .hqx file. This if double clicked extracts a .sit file and
an MC program. The .sit and the .hqx can then go to the
trash.
Yipee .. the MC program worked!
| However, I have experienced strange error messages on some
| Macs, but, even stranger, if you just ignore the messages, the files
| come down all right. I would be happy to find out about the messages,
| anyone out there able to explain why?
I got no error messages!?! The stand alone building (Ibook)
and the download (G4) were both done on Mac OS 9.
Thank you again folks for your kind responses.
