Somebody else just asked me about the same thing. If you used the Import
item under the File menu to bring in the .gif, it was probably only
imported by reference -- that is, it is being loaded from disk instead
of being stored in the stack. The Import dialog has checkbox called
"Don't import" which is checked by default. Uncheck it, and the gif will
be stored in the stack.

This same thing bites me all the time, because I never remember to
uncheck the box. I'd like to see it either unchecked by default, or
better, worded in the positive; i.e., "Import", which would be checked
by default. I think most users expect that the image will be permanently imported.
