do ... as applescript -> "alternative language not found"

In MC 2.4.1, Mac OS 9.1:

  put "tell application"&&quote&"Finder"&quote&return&\
      "activate"&return&\
      "end tell" into cmd
  do cmd as applescript
put the result

returns result "alternative language not found"

alternativelanguages() returns "applescript"

Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?
