Thanks Rodney. I've been yelping about this for weeks now on this list, but no one
has paid notice. I have pretty much same
setup as you (mac, external mic, 0S9.1, and have tried with latest and earlier version
of QT) only diff being that my OS is
Japanese. It turns out, if you record without dialog, there is no difference between
"good/better/best" as they are all
perfectly awful. Moreover, you cannot replace the quality with a variable (local or
global) without incurring a "failed to
supply quality" error.
If you use dialog and record in other formats, you can get some good sound on the Mac,
especially ALaw2:1. But even if record
quality is very good, I sometimes get weird "gapping" on playback. The thing cuts out
for a few seconds, but nothing is
actually lost, just a few moments of silence, then it picks up again where it left
off. This is NOT a record problem, as the
gaps occur in different spots and also the problem goes away if one quits and then
restarts metacard. Note: this gapping
playback problem may be a quicktime compatability problem. I have updated quicktime
and switched languages to English
quicktime. I hope that corrects the problem.

side note: If you use qtvisuals, they go by a different name in different languages
of quicktime. Thus, if someone is
running Japanese or some other quicktime, your visuals may not work. Moreover, the
finder may return an error claiming that
it cannot find that quicktime application. At least that's what seemed to happen to
me. And, unfortunately, I don't think
qtversion() returns the language.

side note 2: funky player. When the player is paused, it sometimes leaves a ghost of
the player thumb in all the places it
was paused. At first I thought this was a handy built-in feature, so one could return
to the exact previous pause spots, but
it sometimes happens and sometimes doesnt.

Thanks again to Rodney for raising the record issue again. And is it impossible to
get MP3 as a record format?
