Yes: there is no API support for this on OS 7/8/9.

You'll find that in some apps it works in some fields but not others,
the distinguishing characteristic being that the standard CDEF
(OS-drawn and managed control) is being used for the fields where this
works. It's a real smoke and mirrors kind of thing because the mouse
software is actually mucking around in the internals of the OS,
changing data values behind the OS's (and the application's) back, as
it were.
Good thing they put support for this into the API for OS X, though,
because this kind of tomfoolery is not something you can get away with
in a memory-protected environment (and is exactly the kind of thing
that made the old Mac OS so crash prone).
