The problem I had was flickering .gif images, that resulted in a freeze requiring a force-quit. Or sometimes just quitting on me with a Type 2 error (Mac PPC).
It was not a memory problem, or an extension problem, or a Metacard version problem. It wasn't even that my stack uses almost 2000 image objects (Scott didn't know it was that big until now :-) The stack is for my use only, what will get distributed is MUCH smaller.
The solution turned out to be that MetacardPPC did not like the .gif images. I used .gif images created with PhotoDeluxe and with GraphicConvertor, and the result was the same. Errors.
But when I used GraphicConvertor to turn the .gif into a .png, MetacardPPC was happy and the problems went away.
It did not like .pngs created with PhotoDeluxe, however. And MetacardOSX was perfectly happy with .gifs or .pngs or whatever I fed it.
Bottom line...
MetacardPPC is a lot happier if you feed it .png images created with GraphicConvertor, instead of .gif images.
I never found a good use for that program until now... and since it will let me batch-convert ALL THOSE MILLIONS of .gif images with one click... I suspect I might actually start liking that program!
(Okay, millions is stretching it a bit... but when you have to convert them one by one, as I've done at least twice already... hundreds can feel like millions... :-)
Why so many? It's an adventure game! All those little tile graphics...
