Ok, it gets wierder... both Rev 2.2 and Rev 2.5b1 exhibit "just fine" paint tools behavior - no wierd spray can/select issues here. It must be in the MC IDE, but I don't know where...
It's not quite so simple -- try this in the Message Box of either IDE:
choose spray can tool; put the tool
