we're in the last few days before students are chosen. I think this is
going to be a great summer & we've gotten some awesome proposals.
some students have already started working & doing some small things
would be a good idea for students that didn't provide any code
samples.

here are 3 small ways to show your talents. work on getting Eclipse,
Apache, (or another organization) to use metalinks, or fixing small
bugs in any of the metalink related apps.

(copied from other mails)

take a look at the Eclipse download page at
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/indigo/SR2/eclipse-jee-indigo-SR2-win32.zip

as you can see, they use php :)

a metalink will have the mirrors, signatures, and checksums from such
a download page (in fact, Eclipse already has an XML format listing
mirrors on the right side of the page, so generating metalinks would
be really easy).

for instance, view the metalink for LibreOffice in a text editor:

http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/3.5.1/win/x86/LibO_3.5.1_Win_x86_install_multi.msi.meta4

as a first step, you would contact them on IRC or a mailing list.
we can help you if you need it. this is just outreach & getting to know them.

then you offer what you you'd like to work on, helping them streamline
their download process

here's info on getting started with them:

http://wiki.eclipse.org/Development_Resources
----
another download page that could take advantage of metalinks is:
http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi

notice that they use mirrors, checksums, & signatures.

you'd want to submit changes to this in a similar way to eclipse above.

----

bug fixing, even small things, would be a big help especially for
students who have not contributed to open source before or submitted a
code sample.

I would just look at the bugs/issues, then make a comment on them that
you are interested in working on it. get a dialogue going. pick
something small to start. the author will usually be very happy to
help and accept patches!

here are some of the bug trackers, but any contribution to any open
source project will help!
