I reverted to JDK 8 using the instructions at https://linuxize.com/post/install-java-on-debian-10/ adapting them since I'm using Debian 11 (Bullseye) and not Debian 10 (Buster). It now seems that mmj2 works correctly. The above errors remain mysterious...
