Dear Listers I should start this off with HO Ho Hoba; Having been to Hoba, I can attest to the fact that a goodsized (by most standards) of the meteorite had been sawn off. Further inquiry found that a delegation from a foreign govt (name begins with "M") were given permission to use a gas-powered cutoff saw to do the deed (it shows). There are indeed "guards" at the site but they are there more to ensure that the public pay the entry fee (about $0.50 if I recall) than to protect the meteorite. Dave
