Hello Rick, Ron and Bernd,
even in theory it is very hard to imagine that a
solid meteorite could orginate
from a cometary meteor shower like the Leonids or
Perseids.
As we have found from studies of our European
Fireball Network, the
cometary material
that hits our atmosphere is very soft and has an extremely
low density (between
0.2 ang 0.6 gram/ccm).
We have photographed really heavy chunks of
cometary material enering our
atmosphere (producing spectacular bolides), but
they ALL burnt up and NEVER
did any piece reach the ground - even if they had initial masses of several tons!
A comet fragment of 1 km diameter would have good
chances to survice its
fiery flight, but not in my backyard,
PLEASE...
A meteorite fall on the peak day of a meteor
shower? Why not - but in my eyes
this is pure coincidence, but no
correlation.
My two cents
Dieter
