Since I lurk on behalf of my husband, the collector, and have asked him repeatedly to ask ya'll this, and he has not done so, I will do so.
I use "Museum Putty", along with "Museum Gel" and "Museum Wax", to hold in place the numerous wonderful things we enjoy displaying. I do this because we have many, many cats, and they knock things over, (sometimes breakable things.) I used the Museum Putty to hold in place a lovely meteorite, on the fireplace mantle. Husband came unglued, meteorite did not. This stuff I purchase through "FLAX", an artists supply catalogue. A wonderful place: just Search "Flax" and you'll find it. They call this stuff "Quake Hold!" It contains "non-toxic, blended museum putty." Just about everything in our house is held where it belongs with this stuff, with no apparent damage to anything. It can leave an oily residue on porous stuff like unfinished wood, but not on the nicely finished wood. It does not hold to fabric very well, nor to baskets. Otherwise, it removes very easily and is reusable. If it were not for this stuff, all knick-knacks would be at the mercy of the 5 Turkish Angoras that live with us. The question is this: Is this stuff safe to use on meteorites? Some of them? All of them? I would not use it on Mars rocks, due to their apparent fragility and friability. I'd like these rocks to be out where we can see them, show them to guests, and fondle them at will. Anyone know anything? Thanks for any advice.
