Hi
Rex,
The
Hartmans can probably offer you the best advice on this. I
can
answer
a few of your questions though:
> How important is the finish? I've
sanded down to a 600 grit. Is this enough,
> or should I polish it to a high
luster?
600 is not enough. I think you need to go at least
1200, or even 1500.

seems worse.

Ferric chloride is VERY fast acting. You typically need to
rinse it off
in less than 10 seconds, though it really depends on the effect
you're
trying to achieve. I have a Campo slice that needed
re-etching (after
I de-rusted it). I decided to go the ferric
chloride route, and it looked
pretty good after only about 8
seconds.
Best, Rob
