Hello Charlie, and List,
I once read a study about
such things happening. The study went on to say that this
occurrence happens more often than one might think.
One of the theories states that a major reason might be
from " Dust Devils, Water Spouts, Tornadoes, Hurricanes and from Cyclonic
Winds with enough power to toss and hold them aloft
carrying them as there last stop, in the Jet Stream waiting
to fall down.
It was also mentioned that this might be a possible
cause of major aircraft failures.

let's not forget rains of
fish and frogs. Sometimes by the hundreds.
