66th Annual Meteoritical Society Meeting July 28 - August 1, 2003, Munster, Germany WHEN AND WHERE - You are cordially invited to attend the 66th Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society, to be held at the University of M�nster from Monday, July 28, through Friday, August 1, 2003. M�nster is served by the international airport FMO (M�nster/Osnabr�ck), located 32 km from the city with regular service from major German cities and from London, Paris, and Z�rich. The city center can easily be reached by public transportation and by taxi. M�nster is also connected to the Frankfurt/Main, D�sseldorf, and Amsterdam airports via the Intercity/Eurocity train system. Oral and poster sessions will be held in the Schloss. Oral sessions will be held in two adjoining lecture rooms seating 395 and 210 people; posters will be displayed in the entrance hall. Directly adjacent to the lecture rooms will be an Internet caf�, a preparation room, and a room for meetings of the various committees. The Schlossgarten is available for informal gatherings and picnic lunches. The Schloss, built in 1773, and now the central University building, is situated close to the city center and within less than 15 minutes walking distance from most hotels. There is also convenient public transportation; bikes can be rented by the more adventurous. M�nster, the city of the Westphalian Peace Treaty, which in 1648 ended the Thirty Years War in Europe, is well suited for a Meteoritical Society Meeting. M�nster is a city of administration, courts, high technology, and especially academia. Actually, our 280,000 inhabitants are rather bourgeois. Two-thirds of the employed people are civil servants and other white-collar employees. M�nster serves as a shopping and cultural center for about 1.4 million people from the city and its environs. The Westf�lische Wilhelms-Universit�t in M�nster with about 46,000 students is the third largest university in Germany. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM - On-site registration will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, and will be accompanied by a welcome reception in the Schloss Foyer. Oral and poster sessions will be held from Monday morning through Friday afternoon, with the exception of Wednesday. ACCOMMODATIONS - About 250 rooms in various central hotels have been prebooked and will be held until May 26, 2003. Participants will find a hotel list with the prices and a map for orientation on the M�nster meeting Web site. Participants are requested to book and pay directly with the hotel of their choice. We also hope to be able to provide travel grants for a few participants from the former CIS and other needy countries. Applicants must be the sole or first author of an abstract to be presented at the meeting and must also submit a travel award application form to the LPI. More information will be included in the second announcement. GUEST ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS - The annual banquet will take place on Thursday evening next to the Schloss. On Wednesday there will be a full day excursion to the Ruhr-area, focusing on socio-economic aspects. During the last two decades this region has made the transition from a former mining and heavy industry district to a modern high-technology and service industry area. During the meeting guests may take part in a number of guided tours in M�nster and its surrounding area, the M�nsterland, with its 100 water castles. A travel agent will be at the meeting site to provide information and reservations. There are postmeeting excursions planned to the Ries meteorite crater, to the Eifel region with its volcanic maar, and to the Wattenmeer, the world's largest tidal flats.
