Eastern suburbs residents in Christchurch were treated to an awesome
display this afternoon as a space object plummeted into the atmosphere.

Some thought it was a meteorite others described it as an asteroid.

One resident told Mytown that the object which came in over the Port
Hills shortly before 4pm and burned its way across the sky over the
Estuary and out to sea through South Brighton.

He said it sounded like a "missile attack''.

Others reported that it left a smokey trail across the sky.
