Rosetta comet chaser on hold

The 600m European space mission to land on a comet has been postponed for
the foreseeable future, the BBC has learned.

A formal announcement suspending preparations of the Rosetta spacecraft is
expected from the European Space Agency (Esa) later on Tuesday.

Although the comet-chasing spacecraft was due to be carried into space on an
older version of the vehicle, the BBC understands investigators have found
something in the operational set-up at Kourou that gives them cause to
worry about Rosetta's success.

It is believed all Ariane 5 launches at Kourou are to be suspended indefinitely
while systems are overhauled.

This means it is likely an unmanned mission to the Moon called Smart-1
will also not now take place in March as planned.
