Meteorite lights up city sky By CHRIS MCKERRACHER Calgary Sun January 17, 2003 Calgarians can take comfort -- the flash seen in the northeastern sky Wednesday night was not an invading alien squadron. According to geologist Alan Hildebrand, the white-blue streak sighted around 6:30 p.m. was a meteorite crashing to Earth. As the meteor was approaching our fair planet, it exploded in a small but violent burst. The biggest chunks, if found, would be about the size of a pop can. "Quite a few (meteorites) are reported in wintertime," said Hildebrand. Because of the long clear nights, winter is meteor-watching season, but you may be in for a long wait. Hildebrand says only about eight sightings are reported in southern Alberta every year. ______________________________________________ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
