Dear meteorite dude, Part of the purpose of the list is educational. There have been several contests on the lists and all have been very fun and informative. I am not advertising anything here so I do not see how this could be called spam. The 240 responses were because several people entered the last contest several times. All of these emails came to us directly not the list. If you read the post carefully you would see that we are only asking for one entry per a member that is interested in making an attempt at an educational contest. At most this might generate 20 postings because it is a difficult contest.
If Art thinks that we are not using the List the way it was intended than we will withdraw the contest from the list and have people email us directly. The purpose of this contest is to show that field identification is very difficult and the importance of lab confirmation. Since several posts are made to the List with meteorite wrongs we thought that it would be challenging and fun to post three strange meteorite rights for a change. If you have a problem with this why don't you use a real name instead of a handle so that we can apologize in person if you feel you and the List are do one.
