At today's press conference, the Shuttle Program manager confirmed that Columbia was over California at 8:53 AM EST when the sensors in the left wing stopped working, which correlates to the time the Caltech astronomer was observing the shuttle from the ground. The Shuttle people have talked to the astronomer and say his observations may be significent.
