I vote for the 1944 fall, "Mike", as the silliest meteorite name of all time.

(just so the Mike Web Ring doesn't go after me, let me specify, it is for Mike G since he started the thread!)

Seriously, there is one frivolous name IMO,

"Santiago Papasquiero"

One letter was in error somewhere in the naming process, probably as submitted by Chuck Lewis to the meteoritical bulletin in Moscow. He was the Curator at the time of the ASU meteorite collection. It almost seems it was done on purpose...

In the original language, a fusion of Spanish and Tepehuan (Nahuatl) language, it meant,

"The Preists of the Temple of the Eagles"

Talk about meteoritical butchery ;-)

It now means when translated,

"James I want potatoes."

Kindest wishes
Doug

I understand that some of these names seem funny when translated from other languages, compared to slang terms, used as idioms or otherwise misinterpreted but I don't see how any are actually silly. This thread is silly in the true sense of the word. I thought the naming process allowed for a certain amount of
flair when there was a choice at all but not silliness.

Is there any meteorite name that can really be tagged as being frivolous?

Bill

Mike, here's a few that always make me chuckle:

Beaver
Boxhole
Chadong
Faucett (this one's always running)
Gan Gan (Git Git's distant cousin)
Potter (Harry?)
Tatahouine (isn't Luke Skywalker from there?)
Vaca Mueta (dead cow for crying out loud!)

Best,
Michael in so. Cal.
