Dear List Members,

I would like to share some information about a special new meteorite:

NWA 5958 – A Uniquely Primitive Ungrouped Carbonaceous Chondrite Meteorite Type 3.00

NWA 5958 is a unique, highly unequilibrated, ungrouped carbonaceous chondrite possessing extreme isotopic signatures. Oxygen isotopes measured for bulk subsamples plot closer to values for the Sun than any other known meteorite! This remarkable specimen should hold important information about the nature and variety of materials in the earliest solar nebula. NWA 5958 is a very fresh meteorite that was purchased in Morocco in September 2009. The Total Known Weight is just 286 grams in a single, fragmented stone. NWA 5958 is a very special early solar system sample!

Continuing study includes careful microanalysis of separated chondrules and microscopic grains. As quoted by Dr. Irving, “The superior freshness of this new specimen makes it a very attractive candidate for such detailed work.”

Plane polarized light thin section image of NWA 5958 (width 14 mm) showing numerous small, diverse objects in a very dark matrix.
