As was previously reported in this forum last month, ebay seller
steelhorse1994 was dumping fake moon and mars rock displays on
unsuspecting buyers through ebay listings for over a year. My
involvement started a few months ago when I recognized the displays were
suspect and made it my mission to uncover the fraud. I obtained one of
these displays and solicited the assistance of Dr. Randy Korotev at
Washington University to analyze it with neutron activation. His initial
report to me last month indicated that it was NOT a rock from space and
was indeed terrestrial. I immediately contacted eBay. Two days later,
the fraud was no longer selling his fakes on eBay. There is still the
occasional ebay seller "reselling" some of these fakes, an unfortunate
repercussion of over 1000 bogus items dumped on eBay.

Be on the lookout. The clear tell for ALL of his fakes is to observe the
reverse display side image. It will say in big letters: "American
Meteorite Collectors Society", which of course is nonexistent,
"Authenicity Guaranteed". NOT.

I followed up with eBay and inquired if they were planning to contact
all the buyers who bought the fraudulent material. Their response was:
"Oh no, they would have to contact us, and within 45 days of the
purchase". Are you kidding me? How self-serving is that!

I have just received the final data analysis from Dr. Korotev regarding
the display that I sent him and have reproduced his conclusions below.
If anyone is interested in seeing the hard data (1 page, primarily
regarding the REE), drop me a note, and I will forward it to you.

Best regards,

Daniel Noyes

.......................................

Dear Mr. Noyes:

Here are the final INAA data on your fake martian meteorite.

There appear to be no published data for NWA 4925, but according to my
colleague Tony Irving, NWA 4925 is a "depleted, permafic olivine
shergottite," of which there are several, including SaU 005 and the new
martian fall Tissint. Your rock is nothing like any of them. It's got
the geochemical signatures of a terrestrial rock - high alkalis, low Cr,
granite-like REE pattern.

I agree with Adam 100%, and my comment to the article says as much.

I really wish writers would stick to subjects they actually know
something about. This article is nothing more than slander.

Hi List. The Transit of Venus will occur here in the Eastern United
States
around 5-7 pm. or around 2-4 pm. on the West coast. The weather here in
Rochester, NY is in decent shape, so it looks like I will have a great
chance to view this for the second time as I was fortunate to see the
2004
transit as well. I will do my best to take a few photos and post them to
my
Website for those who want to check it out in case you missed it due to
weather or having to work etc.

Hi Don,

Just watching a BBC Horizon show about transits at this
moment....looks like i will have to get up at dawn to just get a
glimpse before it exits the sun. I saw the full transit in 2004...a
page with some of my shots here...

http://www.derbyastronomy.org/VenusTransit.htm

Weather not looking very promising for my second observation though.

Hi List,
A great place to see a huge file-size "live" image (refresh every 15
minutes) is Nasa'a Astronomy Picture of the Day...find the feed on their

archive page, at the top via http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html .

Just about to start here on the left coast.

Also, Gary (BK) has some great links to watching from Hawaii, links on
his

Hello all,I am a hunter,I came across this find in central Illinios,I
know its not the greatest place.but it came to me from living here.I
believe it is a carbonaceous chondrite,it is very unique, loaded with
chondrules, they form following trails inside the matrix, native rocks
dont produce. It's surface is weathered, but still has some fusion
crust. The whole rock weights 7 kg.you can look at it

you all can help me out,Thanks for your time...

WE are getting some good pictures here; one of my friends is taking a
shot about every 5-10 min and we hope to get some of them online after.?
Viewing contidions range from terrible (Oahu is socked in, with rain at
the primary viewing spot) to adequate (Maui has intermittent clouds, but
Haleakala is mostly cloudy) to nice on the Big Island (Gary, are you
seeing some good stuff?)

Best!

Hi List. I had a beautiful view with clear skies of this remarkable
Transit!
I am sorry to those who Mother Nature spoiled the view with bad weather.
I
was able to see exactly as Venus just entered the very limb of the Sun.
Quite spectacular. What really caught my eye and was an extra treat of
many
sunspot groups that were visible! What an extra added bonus. If you
would
like to see the pictures I took including the Sunspots click the link to
my
Website below and it will take you directly to that page. I added a blog
if
any one wants to post there thoughts or experiences of this cosmic
event.

Gorgeous views in Southern Ontario this night. A real treat to see
through sun filters on my 8x50 binos.

Had the knife throwing gang at my place tonight and we all put down our
knives and had some wonderful cerebral minutes viewing the transit
before going back to slaughtering my wood targets.

Cheers!

Hi all,

A few members of BIMS and also Caroline Smith and Deborah Cassey from
the NHM recently had a fantastic day at Glatton after being invited to
put on a display for the villages Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Caroline and Deborah brought the Glatton meteorite back to the village
and we also brought a few meteorites to display as well as some poster
displays. The village seemed to really appreciate our display and the
Glatton meteorite which was the star of the show got a lot of interest
indeed. I have posted a few photos of the day on my website, see link
below:

A full write up will follow soon.

Cheers

Martin
