Hi Mendy and list at large,
Hi Mendy,
Yes, I know what he was probably trying to say, but he misunderstood
like you said. But then again, if he doesn't know
quartz from a (real) meteorite he may not know the difference from grams
and milligrams, possible, yes?
Anyway, I was just trying to inject a little, and poorly executed,
levity on the topic. I was just being a little facetious...sorry!
But you're right, no matter what -- zero times anything will always be
zero ( insert 'smiley face' here). Still hate to see things so
obviously wrong
like this though and some folks just don't, or won't, try to determine
legitimacy ( insert 'frown face' here)!

I think he misunderstood the "local gold dealer" and, based on the image,
meant to say grams instead of milligrams. But heck, what's 3 orders of
magnitude matter when a bazillion x zero (the value of the rock per gram) is
still zero.

I sure envy his camera and a scale with the accuracy he either owns or has
access... if I had a camera with the zoom lens capability his has, man, oh,
man -- and that scale!
He states in his description the specimen has a total weight of 45.6 mg (
11.7mg and 33.9mg ), or 45.6/1000 of a gram and measures 1.75 inches long --
this most definitely must be a record for the least dense material from the
outer limits to be a solid that I'm aware of -- lighter than a piece of
popcorn and larger too!
...but to be serious, this is so sad, sort of funny, and very scary all at
once. The Internet in general, and eBay in particular has made it so easy
for the unsuspecting to either buy or sell (as we are all aware here).
I wish those that may mean well and are being sincere (as apposed to maybe
just trying to perpetrate an outright scam) would just do the very basics of
educating themselves just a little before making such outlandish and silly
observations. Where's the meteorite police?
In ( temporary ) resignation -

I think someone got mad at him for making up another whopper of a
story and picked up the nearest piece of quartz and threw it at him.
Trying to justify the indignity of the situation, he decided that it
was in fact a meteorite that nearly hit him. It's the only possible
explanation ...
right.
