Better get the "Bugout" vehicle ready.? That forecast looks remarkably
similar to the Las Vegas weather report.

Curiosity Rover Explores 'Yellowknife Bay'
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
December 18, 2012
Mars Science Laboratory Mission Status Report
PASADENA, Calif. -- The NASA Mars rover Curiosity this week is driving
within a shallow depression called "Yellowknife Bay," providing
information to help researchers choose a rock to drill.
Using Curiosity's percussive drill to collect a sample from the interior
of a rock, a feat never before attempted on Mars, is the mission's
priority for early 2013. After the powdered-rock sample is sieved and
portioned by a sample-processing mechanism on the rover's arm, it will
be analyzed by instruments inside Curiosity.
Yellowknife Bay is within a different type of terrain from what the
rover has traversed since landing inside Mars' Gale Crater on Aug. 5,
PDT (Aug. 6, UTC). The terrain Curiosity has entered is one of three
types that intersect at a location dubbed "Glenelg," chosen as an
interim destination about two weeks after the landing.
Curiosity reached the lip of a 2-foot (half-meter) descent into
Yellowknife Bay with a 46-foot (14-meter) drive on Dec. 11. The next
day, a drive of about 86 feet (26.1 meters) brought the rover well
inside the basin. The team has been employing the Mast Camera (Mastcam)
and the laser-wielding Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) for remote-sensing
studies of rocks along the way.
On Dec. 14, Curiosity drove about 108 feet (32.8 meters) to reach rock
targets of interest called "Costello" and "Flaherty." Researchers used
the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) and Mars Hand Lens Imager
(MAHLI) at the end of the rover's arm to examine the targets. After
finishing those studies, the rover drove again on Dec. 17, traveling
about 18 feet (5.6 meters) farther into Yellowknife Bay. That brings the
mission's total driving distance to 0.42 mile (677 meters) since
Curiosity's landing.
One additional drive is planned this week before the rover team gets a
holiday break. Curiosity will continue studying the Martian environment
from its holiday location at the end point of that drive within
Yellowknife Bay. The mission's plans for most of 2013 center on driving
toward the primary science destination, a 3-mile-high (5-kilometer)
layered mound called Mount Sharp.
NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity during a
two-year prime mission to assess whether areas inside Gale Crater ever
offered a habitable environment for microbes. NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in
Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in
Washington.
More information about Curiosity is online at

International Cometary Workshop
Comets as Tracers of Solar System Formation and Evolution
July 9-11, 2013
Toulouse, France
Abstract submission deadline: March 31, 2013
On-line registration deadline: April 30, 2013
Maximum number of participants: 60
We are pleased to announce a workshop on the role of comets in
understanding the formation and evolution of the Solar System. This
meeting will take place in a three-day science program comprised of
themed sessions, and featuring a mixture of invited reviews, invited and
contributed talks and posters.
The workshop will cover topics ranging from the dynamical and chemical
evolution of the solar nebula during formation, to the techniques for
measuring the composition of comets. Invited speakers include some of
the community leaders in cometary science, measurements and technology
development. We will discuss the role that Rosetta measurements will
play in understanding the origin of Solar System bodies, and what future
missions to comets are being planned. Abstract submissions for posters
and for talks are encouraged, although the number of talks available is
limited in order to keep the meeting to three days. Register early, as
space is limited to no more than 60 participants! There will be a
special issue of the journal Planetary and Space Science devoted to the
works presented at this meeting.

I would like to announce the rebirth of the old web site that was
dedicated to my brother Adam and my first lunar meteorite 12 years ago,
NWA 482. I have completely rebuild www.LunarRock.com to include all of
the planetary meteorites that we have been directly or semi-directly
involved in bringing to the world. I wanted a web site where I could
celebrate and share part our achievements. It showcases two dozen Lunar
and Martian meteorites, provides links to all of the scientific papers
written about these celestial stones and you will find many photos and
other fun features I hope you will enjoy!
The second web site is brand NEW! I wanted to build a web site to share
my different Expeditions & Adventures, Articles I have written or I am
somehow associated with, News, Scientific findings and to offer for sale;
Meteorites, Fossils, Minerals and Artifacts. I believe I have finally
realized a dream I have had for many years in the form of this new web
site, www.NaturesVault.net
I would like to thank the handful of friends who beta tested the sites
during the 2 ? months of building, gave advice and suggestions, and
especially to my programmer friend who went above and beyond to help me
build two custom web sites from blank pages.
Without further delay, I present to you:
Lunar Rock
www.LunarRock.com
and...
Nature's Vault
www.NaturesVault.net
Both sites still have some work to be completed so please check back
occasionally as I will be adding more features and continue to add more

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Shoulder Work At 'Copper Cliff' -
sols 3159-3165, Dec. 12, 2012-Dec. 18, 2012:
Opportunity is working at "Matijevic Hill" (named in honor of Jake
Matijevic) at the inboard edge of "Cape York" on the rim of Endeavour
Crater. There, the rover has been conducting in-situ (contact) science
measurements at a location called "Copper Cliff."
On Sol 3160 (Dec. 13, 2012), Opportunity began taking images with its
Microscopic Imager (MI) for a mosaic of a surface target. Partway
through the activity, the rover's robotic arm experienced a stall in the
shoulder azimuth joint. This has been seen a few times before when the
arm is commanded to move at a slow rate, but not the slowest rate.
Magnetic detents normally hold the motor armature when unpowered, and
under certain slow-rate conditions they are able to restrain the
armature from spinning. At higher rates, the armature has enough
momentum to keep spinning, while at the slowest rates a higher stall
threshold is used. Activities on Sol 3162 (Dec. 15, 2012) confirmed the
joint is OK, and an offset placement of the Alpha Particle X-ray
Spectrometer (APXS) was completed.
On Sol 3165 (Dec. 18, 2012), Opportunity bumped about 18 feet (5.5
meters) to the west to reach a new set of surface targets in this Copper
Cliff area. The rover will likely continue in-situ investigations in the
area through the coming holiday.
As of Sol 3165, the solar array energy production was 533 watt-hours
with an increased atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.955 and a solar array
dust factor of 0.607.
Total odometry is 22.02 miles (35438.37 meters).

they note that according to Huntoon (1989), a

Obviously, I did not send these either. I got them from about 10 different
people myself.

It's not just your name Adam.
Mine was supposedly from John Higgins.
I've been getting these the last couple months, sourced from other email
groups.

Team Meteorite:
*Ordering info is located at the end of this message.*
Since 1995 I have collected data estimating the value of each
meteorite in my personal collection. Unlike coins, stamps and used
cars, there is no worldly source available to review current
individual meteorite prices. My surveys became a true?snapshot? of
each year?s market prices.
I realized that this information might interest other collectors and
dealers. With a current meteorite price report in hand, every
collector could get a fair idea of the value of his/hers holdings.
Dealers could compare their sale prices with competitors. Anyone
considering the purchase of a specimen could instantly realize whether
the asking price is reasonable.
My first effort, the 2005 ?Global Meteorite Price Report? was limited
to the eight-five meteorites within my collection and was
well-received.
In 2008, to better serve the meteorite community I expanded the report
to 121 different meteorites (plus a few of their permutations).
The 2010 survey grew to 185 meteorites.
For the 2013 rendition I have sampled the prices of 241 meteorites,
nearly triple the number first surveyed in 2005!
Included in this report are all prior year's pricing history - July,
2005, February, 2007, September, 2008 and December, 2010. The number
of meteorite dealers offering each meteorite that year also remains,
data that beautifully helps anyone spot price trends and judge
availability. With your 2013 price report one can follow any
meteorites' price and availability trend since 2005!
Here's an example (there are five prices and dealer counts, one for
each indicated year. I hope it translates from my keyboard to the
m-list) :
July, 2005 Feb, 2007
Sept, 2008 Dec, 2010 Dec, 2012
Allende CV3.2 8.10 (14) 11.05 (21) 11.65 (23)
13.56 (14) 16.54 (11) +22%
For the first time I am including a number of NWA's of all classes,
not just planetary and lunar. I conclude the report with my "State of
the Market" analysis and interpretation of marketing trends apparent
in the data. Trust that you will be surprised.
While I request a small payment for the Global Meteorite Price Report,
I continue to offer this work because it fills a need in the hobby.
From the ever-increasing number of repeat purchasers, it's clear that
I am successfully filling this void.
Under the category of 'nothing worthwhile is easy', while attempting
to re-format my working 'Word doc' to an 'Adobe pdf. file', I learned
my account with Adobe was not assessable from Costa Rica. Paul Harris
volunteered and accomplished this work. For those new to the hobby,
Paul's ground-breaking use of the internet to bring meteorites to the
world over the digital interface puts him on the pantheon of the
all-time leaders in our hobby/discipline. He is a quiet, always upbeat
professional and family man who never seeks attention for his good
works. Gracias por todo, don Paul.
To keep this thirteen-page report as affordable as possible, I will
maintain the price at $15, same as it has always been, while hoping
purchasers will honor me and the time necessary to compile and
interpret the data by not re-transmitting the file to others. Keep it
your 'secret weapon' :>)
And as a very special gift to purchasers, included with your price
report will be a second attached file, my unedited, richly illustrated
meteorite-history feature, "The Rise of the Raj and the Fall of
Shergotty".
I am only the privileged messenger revealing this incredible story,
the previously unknown circumstances of the fall of Mars' meteorite
Shergotty 147 years ago.
Why should you care? Shergotty is the namesake for the vast majority
of Martian NWA meteorites. It is the only Mars meteorite with a
discovered twin still resting on the surface of Mars. The fall is an
incredible story that kept me digging in British Museum archives for
several years, a puzzle to assemble while still searching for missing
pieces.
As Meteorite magazine subscribers know, and from my July m-list
messages to this august group, the replacement publisher of this
journal for which I had written since 1996 rejected this latest
contribution to meteorite lore - "too long, some readers may find it
offensive".
Read it now and judge for yourself.
We will travel back to the times of the Raj in India, learn about
Nevil Story-Maskelyne's relentless efforts to grow the British
National Collection, thrill to tales of war and opium, only to be
suddenly transported on a side trip to Mars.
Meteorites Parnalee LL3.6, Dharamsala LL6, Akbarpur H4, Gopalpur H6,
Maddur L5, Pulsora H5, Bustee AUB, eucrites Stannern/Juvinas/Jonzac
and Murchison CM2 will make guest appearances on a stage stretching
from Calcutta to London to Meridiani Planum near the Martian equator.
The tale of Shergotty will make for a memorable winter's night reading
in front of a fireplace while outside, falling snowflakes quietly
create a soft, white strewn field. Pair this great adventure with a
little Bailey's in the hot chocolate to warm your tummy.
"The Rise of the Raj and the Fall of Shergotty" was edited by
Meteorite magazine's founder and my co-conspirator Joel Schiff and is
brilliantly illustrated by my dear friend Dorothy Norton. This
soon-to-be-legendary part of meteorite history- perhaps second only to
the story of the fall of Nakhla- will be included free with your
Global Meteorite Price Report purchase, both transmitted
simultaneously as pdf.Adobe doc attachments to an email. A lot of love
went into these projects. I suggest you print them out in color for
your purest reading pleasure.
Pay $15 for "The Global Meteorite Price Report - 2013" and receive
"The Rise of the Raj and the Fall of Shergotty" here......
www.Paypal.com, search "Kevin Kichinka".
I'll have them in your mailbox within 24 hours.
Next up another surprise for the Holidays ........
While I wish you to keep the price report close to your vest, feel
generous in passing around the wonderful story of the fall of
Shergotty.

Team Meteorite:
I'm on the last lap and the finish line is near. The race to sell more
than a thousand copies of my self-published book before they become
unwanted cockroach motels is nearly over. After this long run -
mentor Darryl Pitt predicted in 2005 that the book would "have legs"-
I am momentarily left with only a few hard copies of 'The Art". The
economics and logistics predict there will never be more printed.
But the spirit of the book lives on as an eBook, available to any who
want some of my hopefully humble, thoughtful insight.
Amazonians Kindling their fire can buy it here:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-Collecting-Meteorites-ebook/dp/B009PPCII8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1353120481&sr=8-2&keywords=the+art+of+collecting+meteorites
Barnes and Noble Nookies can buy it here:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-art-of-collecting-meteorites-kevin-kichinka/1113461735?ean=2940015572629
"The eBook Editor" was the company that worked through a difficult
script as eBooks rarely are rich with color illustrations. And nothing
would have ever happened at all if Paul Harris hadn't found a way to
re-format the books original file after I couldn't get it done
commercially for love or money.
I have added three important chapters covering the circumstances of
the falls of Chassigny, Nakhla (with the only detailed, eye witnessed,
fact-based and historic existing published account of the 'dog-gone')
and now the complete illustrated "The Rise of the Raj and the Fall of
Shergotty".
MARSROX writing on Mars rocks :>)
If my $15 "Global Meteorite Price Report - 2013" can't wiggle a way
into your budget, the ebook is a $9.95 stocking stuffer.
It IS last call on the paperback version so go to
www.theartofcollectingmeteorites NOW for one of the few remaining
available hard copies. After these are gone - Gary "Big Kahuna" and
brother Blaine Reed have a few left, too- the last couple in my
possession are destined for eBay in later days, including the
penultimate signed and numbered #500.
It is my sincerest pleasure to offer these works- the "Global
Meteorite Price Report - 2013", the story of the circumstances
surrounding the Shergotty fall, and a new version of "The Art" as an
eBook to everyone that like me, has passion about those objects of
attraction and dis-traction we call meteorites. And I could not do any
of it without the help, guidance, inspiration and support from the
generous members of Team Meteorite. Thank you!
And before I forget, may everyone's holidays, and all days forever
after, be filled with happiness and grace (and rare rocks from space).
From Nine Degrees North...

Good morning list. I just had the pleasure of talking to rob elliott
at fearnlea meteorites in england. He and his family are doing well.
His meteorite collection has grown some he said. He is somewhat
retired but still goes out and hunts for meteorites in the scotland
and england area. He found a new meteorite last year. A stoney 22 gram
piece that is now in classification and is also on ebay. It has been 7
years since I saw him at the tucson show. I first met him in 2002
when he came to chicago. He is really a class act. For all of you who
have met him you know what I mean. He hopes to get back to tucson
someday. But now he enjoys the life he has and meteorites are still
part of his world. Truly a nice person. Have a great day all.
