Hi Graham, Keep in mind that asteroid orbits are dynamic, and that most of the Apollos, Amors and Atens of today once had their aphelia between Mars and Jupiter. Planetary perturbations and resonances over the millenia caused those orbits to evolve into earth-crossing (or in the case of Amors, earth-approaching) orbits.
