Thanks everyone. Found out that some kind of toolbar made its way as an
extension on Firefox without my conscious knowledge! I deleted its ass and
all is good. Sorry to bother all of you with this non meteorite issue.

Ditto what Peter said. I don't browse the internet without an
ad-blocker. Facebook and half of the sites on the web would be
intolerable without it.
Get an ad-blocker - you will immediately wonder why you waited so long.
