Hello Ian,

Price guides are so hard to make because there are so many factors some of which are:

Classification?
Size of specimen?
Total known weight?
Total available weight to collectors?
Quality of specimen?
Is it a whole, end, full slice, part slice or micro?
Total available weight of others in the same classification?
Is there a story involved with it?
Is it a fall or a find?
Is it a cash sale or a trade?

The real danger in setting out a guide is that for most specimens, unless your range is very wide, odds are you, as an "expert" will be proven too high or too low.  Either instance leaves those you are instructing to either get set up to be burned or to not acquire a legitimately good deal because a price is off.

The best advice is to have a new collector gain some collecting friends that are actively buying and correspond with them.  Also, most of the time, ebay seems to give a pretty good idea as to what things are worth.

I hope this helps?

Steve Arnold

Hi all.

I’m currently writing an article about meteorite collecting for a journal of strange phenomena and was hoping you could help me write it. I don’t class myself an expert and I’m merely writing it as a passionate beginner but hope I can communicate some of the excitement you all feel when a new acquisition arrives in it’s box !!

What I wanted help with is a price guide going by current market trends. Basically an idea of the top $/gram price and which stones are the most sought after. I have a rough idea of rough market values but a more educated statement would be useful. stones are the most sought after. I have a rough idea of rough market values but a more educated statement would be useful. Even I know that the section on pricing in Nortons ‘Rocks From Space’ is very out of date.

Any advice on this and any other comments I could include in my feature would be greatly appreciated.

Also – where could I find copyright free pictures If I wanted a few to illustrate the article?

I’ll keep you all informed when my article is published and include credits for any help/ quotes.

Thanks in advance
