Actually, acute means rapid onset, regardless of the severity of the symptoms.  
 
This theory, in various forms, pops up from time-to-time.

Hi all, These people have a serious problem! Just the name SARS shows their stupidity, Severe acute respiratory syndrome. Since severe and acute have the same meaning they are calling this sickness, Bad Bad respiratory syndrome. What did a dumb child name it? And they think it came from a comet to boot?
