Propaganda like this should be laughable. It is thinly-veiled politics with a financial agenda behind it. While the Omanis are worried about meteorites and seashells, there is a very real and dangerous insurgency going on all around them that has nothing to do with rocks or driftwood.
The article reminds me of that awful NYT hit piece published a while back that Anne eloquently rebutted in public. It is full of factual errors and misconceptions based on speculation and media exaggerations. I think one of the most telling is also one of the more subtle things it (the article) says - it tries to make the point that Oman was known for many thousands of recoveries which attracted foreign meteorite hunters to come. In fact, Oman was put on the meteorite map by the work of mostly private and mostly foreign hunters. Talk about biting the hand that could feed you. This has nothing to do with Omani sovereignty or ethical principles, it has to do with political posturing by some elements of the Omani government, and money. Mostly money. Note to self : stay away from Oman. And maybe that is their ultimate point : stay away.
